Ways to Stay Hydrated as an Over the Road Truck Driver

Here at TNi, we strive for safety, service, and satisfaction for our drivers and customers. We are always looking out for ways to keep our drivers safe, happy and healthy while out on the road. Staying properly hydrated and healthy is an important key to those goals.

As an over the road truck driver, you should know that staying hydrated is important especially during the warmer months. But with long hours on the road and limited access to facilities, it can be tough to drink enough water. Here are five tips to help you stay hydrated and healthy on the road:

  • Drink water regularly. This may seem obvious, but it's important to drink water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Aim to drink eight glasses of water per day, or more if you're sweating a lot.

  • Keep a water bottle with you. This way, you'll always have water on hand even if you're not near a water faucet or fountain. A refillable water bottle is also a more environmentally friendly option than disposable bottles. We recommend keeping a pack of water bottles in your truck!

  • Add flavor to your water. If you don't like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or cucumber. You can also try flavored sparkling water or sports drinks.

  • Eat fruits and vegetables. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content so they can help you stay hydrated. Some good choices include watermelon, cucumbers, celery, and tomatoes.

  • Take breaks. If you're feeling thirsty, it's a good sign that you need to take a break. Get out of the truck, stretch your legs, and of course, drink some water!

By following these tips, you can stay hydrated and healthy on the road. This will help you stay alert and focused which is essential for safe driving.

Here are some additional tips for staying hydrated as an over the road truck driver:

  • If you're driving in hot weather, drink even more water.

  • If you're taking medications that can cause dehydration or if you have any medical conditions that make it difficult to stay hydrated, talk to your doctor about how to manage your condition while you're on the road.

Here are a few drink options to choose from while driving in hot conditions:

  • Water is the most hydrating drink of all. It's calorie-free, refreshing, and helps to flush out toxins from your body. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water per day.

  • Gatorade or Powerade is also a good source of hydration. It contains electrolytes, which help to keep your body fluids balanced. Gatorade and Powerade also come in a variety of flavors, and even sugar free choice. Additionally, they make protein shakes, immunity gummies, and powdered hydration packets.

  • Fruit juice is a good source of vitamins and minerals, and it can also help to keep you hydrated. However, fruit juice is high in sugar, so it's best to drink it in moderation.

  • Mio or Crystal Light packets are also a great source of hydration and electrolytes. If drinking plain water is difficult because of the bland flavor, try adding different fruit flavors to encourage drinking more water at a time.

  • Liquid IV is a great way to feel better fast! It is a very popular electrolyte powder that helps you rehydrate faster than water alone. Electrolyte powders are commonly used during intense physical activity. They even come in a variety of different flavors, and can be added to any kind of bottled water. This is very convenient to keep in your truck without taking up a lot of room.

It's important to stay hydrated, especially during hot weather or when you're exercising or going in and out of the heat. By drinking plenty of fluids, you can help to keep your body functioning properly and avoid dehydration.
