Rolling into a Greener Future with SmartWay

It’s 2025. It’s not just cool to care about the environment, it’s necessary.

Experts say by 2050, global freight transportation emissions will surpass passenger vehicles due to rising E-Commerce trends.

Luckily, green trucking initiatives are underway. Tri-National, Inc. is doing our part as a SmartWay carrier.

SmartWay

SmartWay is a leading organization partnered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to assist logistics providers with sustainable resources and information. Giving recognition to the top carriers in the US, these awards typically involve efforts made around:

  • Sustainably moving goods
  • Using less fuel
  • More efficiency
  • Reducing environmental footprint

Holding a badge awarded by SmartWay sends a clear signal to suppliers and customers about a company’s initiative to protect the environment and public health. TNi is a proud SmartWay carrier in our commitment to lower carbon emissions during our freight shipping process.

TNi’s High Performance as a SmartWay Carrier

Tri-National, Inc. excels as a top 3.6% performer in SmartWay’s High Performer categories, and has for three consecutive years. We currently hold the title as a SmartWay High Performer for achieving high performance ranking as a SmartWay TL/Dry Van Truck Carrier in the “Carbon” and “All Metrics” recognition categories.

We remain a premier USMCA transportation and logistics provider throughout the Midwest and Southeast Corridor, with service points along the Canada and Mexico borders.

Our dedication to safety, service, and satisfaction goes out to our customers and beyond.

Growing demand for green trucking initiatives

With the greener goods movement sweeping over social media, customers online have been demanding transparency regarding freight transportation. Manufacturers have hopped on the train by showcasing sustainability efforts of reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable packing materials and aiming for “less plastic, less waste” initiatives.

The EPA’s SmartWay program highlights supply chain and logistics companies by measuring and benchmarking data for the public, all the while providing insights for freight efficiency improvement.

Working with a broad range of national and global organizations to harmonize actions towards sustainability, SmartWay provides policy makers and the public models to show just how carriers like TNi holding the SmartWay title are making a difference.

TNi’s as an eco-conscious carrier

Utilizing advanced trailer and tractor technologies that monitor, track, and provide data on all OTR trips is only a small part in how we excel in the SmartWay High Performance program.

Companywide efforts are executed via our TNi headquarters, terminals, truck fleets, and professional drivers.

In-office corporate initiatives take place with our daily recycling, tinted windows, re-fillable water bottle stations, and motion-sensor lights that allow our buildings to perform at maximum capacity while reducing energy consumption.

TNi’s fleet is made up of late model Volvo 760 VNL engines that are at least 2 years old or newer. Volvo just released a brand new 2026 860 VNL Volvo engine that earns up to a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to prior models. The new Volvo design is working its way into the TNi operation, gradually replacing older models that age out of the fleet.

TNi’s fleet continuously deploys fuel efficiency initiatives, such as:

  • Tire pressure monitoring systems
  • Trailer skirts to decrease air drag on all TNi trailers
  • Flow-below kits on all TNi trucks for increased air flow
